Word 2004 saving every document as a "read Only" and keeps quitting

Has anyone had this happen? Word 2004 keeps saving my documents as
"read only." I trashed the preferences and reinstalled. Also on
every, new or old, document it says "Word can not fire event," along
with it quitting for no particular reason. Can you help me figure out
why it is saving everything as a read only file?

Sigh...I am doing a big project in Word and I am not sure what to do
about all these issues. I went to email Microsoft and it says my
serial is not the correct one, even thought I am reading it directly
off the package.

Here is the error report from when word quit unexpectantly.

Have you checked your Preferences right before saving? Word Menu >
Preferences > Security > Read Only Recommended. Make sure that box is not
checked. If Matt is right, a macro may be checking that box without your
knowing it.

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel How does one delete an entire page from a document? My document is 3 pages. I only have text on 2 pages and want to delete the 3rd page as it is blank with my header on it. I'm sure it's oh so simple but I just can't figure it out right now! Help! Thank You!

Hi All, I am trying to store a word(Child) document inside another word document (Master) in such a way that the Child document can't be seen when the Master is opened (Master and Child will be inside a single file). By default, when the document is opened, the Master document is shown. The Child will be shown when I click my Active X's "show child document" menu item. To achieve this I tried to store the Child document inside my ActiveX but quickly found that I can't store more than approx 200KB (I may be wrong in the exact size) of Child document. I then tried to store the Child document inside Document variable of Master Doc. The Document variable is hidden so seemed OK. I broke my Child document in chunks of 100 KB and stored in recognizable Document variables of Master document Object. So far so good. I tried this on Windows 2000 Server with Office 2003 and it worked but on Windows XP after creating 2 such Document variables containing the Child documents it started giving strange data e.g. If the Child document size is 60 KB whle storing, on retrieving I get 100 KB!! which then crashes by application while checking. This is only happening in Windows XP Home Edition and Professional. Now questions; 1) Is there any other way to store word document inside a word document programmatically ? 2) Any reason why is it failing to give me the correct data? 3) On programmaticall removal of the document variables, the size of the Master document remains the same, why ? Thanks for reading.. Regards, Wahaj

Word changing dates in documents
2 replies , 12/28/2006, 8:02:52 AM
Office 2003 Professional. I just started reading some old journal pages I wrote in May of 2002. When I glanced up to see when these entries were made, instead of the date of the entry, all three entries were today's date! How do I keep Word from changing dates in documents that need to have the original dates?

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) I have attempted to open a blank document, and each time I open a "new blank document" I get an old document that I wrote sometime back and saved, as if it is a template for my "new blank document." I hope that makes sense to someone. I have attempted to search through my tools, and other items on the tool bar to try to stop this from occurring but to no avail, it will not give a true "blank" document. Can someone please offer some suggestions on how this can be removed or deleted? Thanks

Saving Documents

Version: 2004 Word saved a 50 page document (with tables) into an unreadable format. All the text is now jumbled and interspersed with tiny boxes. How can I either revert back to my original document, or convert so that it returns to a table format. <br><br>The document was originally started on a Mac, saved on a server then re-edited on PC, put back on a server and then re-opened and worked on, on Mac. I had been editing for 3 hours, when it converted into an unreadable file, when I asked it to save. The text then popped up still there, but all jumbled and complete with hundreds of little boxes!? <br><br>I am slowly going crazy trying everything to get it to revert back to my original file! <br><br>Any help much appreciated!

How do you do this? Is it possible? Why not?

Using Visio 2003 Pro & Office 2003 Text editing is much easier in Word. But when I copy/paste the completed Word Text into an expandible-sized Vision Text box - the copied material exceeds the size of the text box. Currently, I manually delete the Word carrage returns line by line then re-establish the carrage returns within the Visio text box. It works - but is time intensive and waisting. How can one do this smarter? I envision a macro that can read a Word file, strip all control characters, and lay the information properly within the Visio text box. It would be fine, to have to insert a value into the VBA code for the length of each line string-length that would fit the current text box size. (If I re-sized the textbox, I would have to ascertain an updated length for Visio to insert a carrage return. Is this making any sense? Dennis

I recently purchased an ASUS laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. I have been have major problems with cursor control when composing documents, even now as I type. If I don't continue typing at lightning speed, the cursor position changes in the document, sometimes wipes out text just typed or the computer jumps to another open Microsoft application. Any suggestions on the source of this problem and how to correct it? Best regards, EA

Document Imaging vs. OmniPage

I’m an Office 2007 user. While searching for the Document Imaging feature, I found the following announcement on Microsoft site: "As a Microsoft Office Document Imaging customer, you are entitled to upgrade to ScanSoft's OmniPage Pro OCR software at a special price". I want to know what is the difference between ‘OmniPage’ and ‘Microsoft Office Document Imaging software’. I mean, are they used together or alternatively? When I create a new document in Word 2003 and highlight just one line to format, the formatting is applied to the entire document (bolding, underlining, centering, etc.) Never had this trouble before. Didn't change a thing in the program. What's going on? Am I in the Twilight Zone?

Cells being erased on a shared Excel document
3 replies , 11/19/2008, 2:20:43 PM
Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Hello, We are three in the office using Macintosh computers (Mac mini/Powerbook / Macbook pro) with Leopard and Office 2004 up to date. We share an excel sheet and use it as a schedule. The document doesn't contain any calculation but only text. It is located on our Windows 2003 server and we connect using SMB. Most of the time, the document is opened on all the computers at the same time and somehow when User 1 is changing some cells and saving, and then User 2 saves again, User 2, instead of getting the cells updated by User 1, gets empty cells instead - while User 1 even after re-saving has his updted cells as they should be. User1 gets empty cells only after closing the file and opening it again. Sometime, User 2 will get one updated cell and several erased. Any solution ? ? We're loosing a lot of data like that and finaly had to stop sharing the doc. but this is making our work much more complicated. This happens only when two or more users have the document opened at the same time. Many thanks for any help you could provide. Sorry for my English, All my best wishes, Marko

Hi, I have split the macros I had originally stored in Normal.dot up into 6 different templates and have thereby reduced the size of Normal.dot from 600+kB to 64kB (Cleaning up a load of dead code and inefficient code in the process). My question now is should I run a VB script to go thru all the Word documents on the system and open and then save them as web pages, or delete the last section in each document, in an attempt to "clean-up" potential corrupted documents now that I've changed dramatically the code in Normal.dot -and therefore the pointers to the various macros I call ? If I understand the advice on the Word MVP website, pointers to the macros used (if any) in a given document are stored in the last section of each document. If Normal.dot has been completely re-organized, should the programmer then run a "clean-up" script on the Word documents on their system in order to get the pointers to the code used updated in a reliable manner, or will Word update the pointers in the last section automatically, and more importnantly to me, reliably? If I am completely off-base with regards the pointers in Word and how Word stores, in a given document, the info about which templates and macros to call in displaying that document, please let me know. I really want to understand what Word does in linking to and executing the macros and templates used in a given document. Any book references, or webiste links on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Ed

I am having problems with a machine running windows xp pro and Office XP Pro. There are three users assigned to the machine. user 1 has admin privileges. Users 2 and 3 are limited accounts. User 1 is able to open all word and excel files correctly. Any suggestions to correct this problem?

Document Actions controls problem
0 replies , 1/31/2006, 4:19:12 PM
Hello ! Sometimes some of my controls in the Document Actions task pane (buttons, checkboxes) are rendered as links. I never use the link type in my code, everything is double checked and I only use buttons and checkboxes. I was suspecting some misbehaviour in case of labels being too long, but some of the buttons with one-word short labels are sometimes (quite randomly) rendered as links. Has anyone ever come across a similar problem with Word 2003 Smart Documents ? Regards, Wojtek

document not saved
1 replies , 8/14/2006, 1:56:55 PM
Hello, I've seen this issued posted a few years back and never saw an answer to this so I'm wondering if anyone has any more insight to it. There are about 30 users who share a workbook and when they attempt to save some changes they've made they receive the following error. 'Your changes could not be saved to 'xxxx.xls', but were saved to a temporary document named 'xxxx.xls'. Close the exisiting document, then save it under a new name.' When they try to save under a new name, either clicking on save or save as, it bring up: 'Document not Saved.' The only way it would save is if I selected save as workspace. I've read some cryptic answers about Anti-Virus being the cause or loss of network connection....any other possibilities? They are mixture of users using either NT or WinXP with either Office 2000 or 97. thx

Recently I was given a new computer at work, and I don't think that Microsoft Office Document Imaging is working quite the same way it used to: When I rotate the pages in a scanned document (usually grayscale) and then save the document as a TIFF, the file size increases. Whereas, I seem to recall on my old computer the file size became smaller. I have tried changing the compression settings: Tools/Options/ Compression. From there I can reduce the file size of MDI files but not TIFF files. Under TIFF Color Compression is a tick box "Perform Lossless Compression" - this box is ticked, but greyed out so that I can't alter the setting. Underneath that tick box is a slider "Optimize JPEG compression in favour of" - Smaller file size - Better Quality Image. This is greyed out too. Would altering these settings (especially in the direction of Smaller file size) help me create smaller TIFF files, and, if so, what can I do to change these settings? Thanks, Harry
