Can't change date format in Excel footer

I have a client running Office 2003 Standard Edition on Windows XP 
Professional. Both products are fully patched via Microsoft Update. Regional 
& Language Options are set to English (Canada). The short date format is 
shown as  22/01/2007. This is the desired format.

In Excel, however, when my client inserts a Date field in a footer, the date 
field appears with the format 01/22/2007.

How can we modify the format of a date field that appears in a footer?

Hi Richard,

As far as I know, Excel uses the Short date style format specified under 
Regional Settings in Control Panel. The default date format for English 
(Canada) is dd/mm/yyyy, and the date your client inserted as footer in 
Excel should also be the same format. So I would like to confirm with you 
if the regional setting is right on your side. To make it clear, I have 
attached a screenshot for your reference.

If the setting is right and the problem still persists, then please try the 
following tests and tell us the test results. This will help us narrow down 
this issue quickly.

* Test 1: Start Excel with /s switch

1.	Click Start>Run
2.	Type Excel /s and click OK.
3.	After Excel starts, please insert a date filed into the footer and 
determine if this issue is gone.

* Test 2: Use another Windows account
=======================

Please use another Windows account to log on the system and see if the 
issue is gone. Please also create a new user account to test. This will 
eliminate the possibility that this user account is corrupted or damaged.

If your problem still occurs, please help us collect more information for 
further research:

1.	Select a blank cell within a worksheet and hit CTRL+; (this will insert 
a date in the selected cell). Does the date format display right?
2.	Please provide an MPS_REPORT so that we can do further research.

I tried the troubleshooting steps you suggested. The problem persisted in 
each case. I have produced an MPS Report file, but since I don't know how to 
attach a file using this web interface I have placed the CAB file here for

Hi Richard,

I have analyzed your MPS report but failed to find anything unusual. Please 
provide some additional information as below:

1.	Create a new workbook in Excel. Choose one cell and hit the combination 
key "CTRL+;". Does the right date format displayed in that cell?
2.	You said the date format in footer is not correct. Then what about in 
header? Does it correct when you insert the date field in header?
3.	Does this also occur when you insert the date in a Word document?

Meanwhile, I would like to suggest as below:

Before we start, please be sure that the Regional and Language is set to 
English (Canada).

* Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP
======================

1. 	Click Start>Run, type "msconfig" in the Open box (without the quotation 
marks), and then click OK.
2. 	On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then clear the Process 
System.ini File, Process WIn.ini File, and Load Startup Items check boxes. 
You cannot clear the Use Original Boot.ini check box.  
3. 	On the Services tab, select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, 
and then click Disable All.  
4. 	Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.  
5. 	After Windows starts, determine whether the symptoms still occur. 

If it works fine after Windows clean boot, please obtain the detailed 
troubleshooting steps in our KB article:

1.	Restart Windows.
2.	At the boot sequence, long press F8 key to invoke startup menu.

Why does the change change to a number?

Hi all, I've noticed something wierd and always wondered WHY it happens. When you type a date into a cell, and then change the Formatting of it to a 'general' cell, it turns into a number. How does it come up with that number? What is the significance? i.e. type today's date of "12/7/2007" - change it to a 'General' format, and it then says "39423". I'm a trainer of Excel and this question always comes up. I'm curious myself too. Thanks! Joe

Excel Fill Color Changes without manually changing it

My Excel "Fill Color" changes on actual saved documents, for instance I will fill a row yellow for categorizing work, and one light green. Then later and/or after I open it next the yellow and green are the same. Also, when I go to use the same blue, the next day it's a different blue. This is killing me, when my leads are categorized I don't know which was yellow, which was green and if I'm updating the next day I need to fix all the inconsistencies in my key and chart. Please help if someone knows why. Thanks.

I am exchanging my MacBook for a MacBook Pro. What is the best way to get Office on the new machine? If I copy (or migrate) it from one to the other, will there be issues with serial number verification, etc? Do I have permission to install it from the disk on a different computer? Thanks.

dates change to numbers

Hi, I have workbook with a main worksheet which I filter then copy the filtered records to another worksheet within the same workbook. Therefore there are several worksheets within this workbook. On only one of these worksheets my dates change to numbers. When I check the number format it looks fine. I've deleted the worksheet and inserted a new one, but the 'corrupted' dates moves to another worksheet. I've already spent a fair amount of time entering formulas,etc to this file and would rather not have to re-do the entire file, any suggestions/solutions (or why this may have happened?)

Changing Home page

I have a WinME system with IE5.5. I just cannot change the home page!! Everytime i change it in the properties and reboot the PC it reverts back to the original! I have even tried doing a search in the registry for the url and deleted every mention of it, BUT as soon as i reboot it comes back again. Any ideas?

I have a spreadsheet with various values in three columns. Each column is a different month of the yr. The values in some of the cells are used to calculate ratios which appear in let's say row 10. C D E F Row 1 2 5 10 Row2 8 9 3 Row 10 =C1/C2*365 =D1/D2*365 =E1/E2*365 in F10 =AVERAGE(C10:E10) and in column G through all the other months it is currently using that same average. If there are no values in the column needed to do the calculation then e.g F here, then the cell should average the previous months and use that average for future months. If the cells/ columns for that month do have values then it should calculate using the relevant formula and then adjust the next months cell with the new average e.g. G in this case would then average c10:f10 and not to e10. How do I use the if function to do this properly. Thanks.

Axis Values Keep changing

I have a scientific table of values containing time increments as column entries (0, .5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, etc.). There is a corresponding record entry for each of these time increments. When I attempt to create a CHART, however, that range of values changes to 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.). I've played with changing the increment values to number format, and I can't seem to get beyond what excel's chart wizard insists upon doing to this range of values. Any suggestions?

i've added several controls (option button and text boxes) onto a worksheet controls are formatted with 12 pt height and 8pt Ariel font, the worksheet rows are 13.5pt height (also 8pt Ariel) the problem is: when the control has focus, the point size of the control lable or value changes. since they are integrated into worksheet's layout, this changing (getting larger, and then pack to the original display size) is MOST annoying do i have a switch wrong, or is there a work-around? -m

I don't know if templates work this way; if they do I can't make it happen. Here's what I want to do: I have a bunch (20 or so) of workbooks, with a few (10 or so) worksheets in each. The worksheets are based on three different templates; not proper .xlt templates as yet, just copied out of another workbook. I want to update some of the formatting and formulas on all of the worksheets. What I'd really like is for the worksheets to only save the data that I've typed into that sheet, and pick up the formulas and formatting from the template, so that when I change the templates all the worksheets in all the workbooks get magically updated. Does that make sense? Is it possible? I'm using Excel 2003, but it would be good if any solution worked on 2000 as well. Thanks for any help or suggestions, Randy Orrison

Hello Group: I'm obviously new. To keep it simple, here's how I'll pose the question: Suppose I have multiple rows and two columns. Column A contains names of people Column B contains each person's age The last cell in column B is to be an average of the ages, so in that cell I insert the function =AVERAGE(B1:B100) This works fine, but as I add rows, I have to change the formula to include the recently added row, B101, then B102, etc) Is there any way I can make the function automatically include the last cell? Sort of like a wild symbol? It's not a big problem, but I'm just wondering if that's possible. Thanks. Jack

On my spreadsheet in cell A1 I have a text label containing the word "Department" What I want is when I save the file as Schedule 1 (Division).xls I want cell A1 change from "Department" to "Division" based upon what is within the parentheses in this example Any tips will be appreciated. Hello all, From my Delphi application I export data in text form. I use Delphi 7 and Office 2003. My PC uses 'dd-mm-yyyy' as ShortDateFormat. Not only in "Regional and language options" is this the case, I also explicitly set this setting in my programm (it addresses the same setting). The problem now is that when I export a date (in text format) like "13-1-2005", Excel sees this as an error (green triangle in cell). Excel doesn't recognize it as a date, whereas "12-1-2005" is recognized, and does represent 12 jan 2005, as it should. Obviously it does not use the configured date format at the moment of export, it uses something like 'mm-dd-yyyy'. However, clicking on the cell with a "wrong date" so that the cursor appears, followed by pressing the enter key makes Excel see it as a correct date. I tried formatting the cells in the correct date format, this however doesn't help either. I use early binding, the used objects in delphi don't seem to include some kind of date format setting. Hi Everyone, I'm putting together some vb code to change the colours of the bars or lines on a chart in one go. I've set it up so far for when the data is in rows (ie the individual series lie along the x axis). However, I need to consider how to cycle through the data points for when it is in columns, which essentially means I need to search for xlcategory names and the relavent points (I think). I suppose I also need to consider other types of charts and so would also be grateful for any guidance in how to best do this (as I presume you can't use the 'interior' object for when using lines!).
